Funeral at Baile Thiar
Páraic Ó Domhnaill, 9th, Aug, 1942.

There was a man and a woman living in a house in Baile Thiar. The woman was sick in bed for a while, and on this particular night, an occasion of business took the man to another town.
And it was deep in the night when he was to come home. On his way, he came upon a funeral and he was surprised because he had not heard that anyone in the place had been lost. He did not know what was the best thing to do, but courage came upon him. He understood very well that it was not a right thing to be there.
And he went before them and he stood in their way. At that time they laid the coffin on the ground and when they laid it down, the people disappeared from view and he did not see them again.
He took the board off of the coffin and who was in it but his own wife who was sick in bed at home.
He put her on his back then and he took her home. They say that an old hag laid in bed in her place, and the fine young woman was there in the coffin.
I heard it from the old people, and they said it was true because they knew about this man and his house. I had knowledge of the house myself, the house that Tom Mháiréaid used to live in. It was said that this happened about a hundred years ago. The good people it was.
